HRiA Nominates Children’s Hospital Boston for Asthma Initiative

Children’s Hospital Boston has been awarded the Environmental Protection Agency’s National Environmental Leadership Award in Asthma Management following a nomination by HRiA.
The award recognizes their innovative Community Asthma Initiative (CAI). The program provides multiple visits by a nurse to low-income children who have severe asthma and have ended up in the hospital because it was uncontrolled. The nurses provide both clinical education to the family, as well as providing a home assessment of potential environmental triggers. When environmental causes are found, the family is provided supplies and services to assist them in addressing the problems.
CAI's successes have been well-documented, including demonstrating vastly improved outcomes for children enrolled in the program, and significant cost savings because the reduced number of urgent care hospital visits.
