HRiA Gives 2011 Life Sciences Award to Harvard Professor

Dr. Joan Miller was given HRiA's 2011 Life Sciences Award for her leadership role as the Chair of the Scientific Review Committee for the Edward N. and Della L. Thome Memorial Foundation, Bank of America N.A., Trustee, Awards Program in Age-Related Macular Degeneration Research.
The program, one of several managed by HRiA's Medical Foundation Division, distributed $8.7 million in awards to 14 researchers in 2009. The Scientific Review Committee reviewed 116 applications from investigators throughout the United States. The goal of the Awards Program is to support translational research that will lead to improved therapies for individuals suffering from age-related macular degeneration, the number one cause of blindness in older adults.
Dr. Miller is the Chief and Chair of Ophthalmology at the Massachusetts Eye and Ear Infirmary (MEEI) and Harvard Medical School, Henry Willard Williams Professor of Ophthalmology at MEEI.
