We are searching for a Training Associate for the OOPTP who will provide opioid overdose prevention training and related technical assistance to sites across Massachusetts. The Training Associate will be part of a dynamic training team and work with a co-trainer at most sites. They will function as a substance use/opioid overdose subject matter expert and trainer on the team. They will contribute to training development, delivery, and evaluation. In addition, the Associate will manage other aspects of the work, communicate with partners and clients, develop training materials, and help coordinate meetings and events. The Training Associate will also support the work of the Training and Capacity Building Department and other projects as applicable.
Through the Opioid Overdose Prevention Training Project (OOPTP), Health Resources in Action provides technical assistance and training in overdose and prevention harm reduction practices for staff and service providers in community corrections centers, homeless shelters, family shelters, public libraries, and other venues. HRiA will also bring together professionals in the field to discuss, identify, and promote strategies, techniques, and best practices for opioid overdose prevention. The OOPTP is funded by the Massachusetts Department of Public Health, Bureau of Substance Addiction Services.

In addition, the Associate will manage other aspects of the work, communicate with partners and clients, develop training materials, and help coordinate meetings and events. The Training Associate will also support the work of the Training and Capacity Building Department and other projects as applicable.
The Training Associate will report to the Managing Director of Training and Capacity Building Department, and will collaborate with our substance use disorder projects at HRiA (e.g., the Massachusetts and Illinois Helplines). This is an exempt, full-time position.
Duties and Responsibilities:
The Training Associate will be responsible for the development and implementation of trainings for the Opioid Overdose Prevention Training Project in collaboration with the Co-Directors of the project. The Associate will be part of the Training and Capacity Building team, and will collaborate with other staff focused on substance use disorders. They will provide significant project management expertise in a fast-paced, high-intensity, high-visibility context to ensure the effective, efficient, and timely implementation of the project. This includes but is not limited to the following:
- Supporting the development and implementation of a flexible but specific workplan for the project.
- Communicating effectively, efficiently, and appropriately with the team and with Co-Directors of the project.
- Communicating effectively, efficiently, and appropriately with the other Training Associate on the project.
- Coordinating and participating in weekly team meetings, in collaboration with the Co-Directors of the project.
- Managing the scheduling of the trainings with the Administrative Coordinator.
- Helping develop and refine the training curriculum for the OOPTP.
- Conducting in-person trainings and providing technical assistance to staff of target organizations and programs across Massachusetts, including community corrections facilities and homeless services providers.
- Supporting the development of Opioid Overdose Prevention Summits
- Contributing significant substance use and opioid overdose expertise to development, implementation, and evaluation of the OOPTP and other projects as applicable.
- Supporting the work of the Training and Capacity Building Department by assisting with program development, training, and administrative functions.
- Contributing technical skills and/or content expertise to other related HRiA projects and to the organization, as appropriate or needed.
- Using feedback data to refine trainings and/or identify future training or technical assistance needs.
- Collecting and reporting data for overall evaluation and reporting.
- Maintaining or building skills in management, supervision, substance use, and related content areas.
- Contributing to blogs, HRiA website content, and other sources to share and promote our expertise.
- Presenting at local conferences/events with senior HRiA staff, as appropriate
- Suggesting ideas/improvements in project and/or organizational processes and systems through participation in teams and committees.
New Business Development:
- Assisting with proposal writing and/or submission as needed; this may include working with the Managing Director and other staff to prepare scopes of work and budgets for contract extensions, as well as working with the Development Manager to prepare proposals for rebids or other new opportunities.
- Contributing to HRiA website, blogs, and other opportunities to market services and expertise.

- Bachelor’s degree and/or 2-3 years professional experience working in fields of substance use or harm reduction OR experience as a professional trainer
- Knowledge of substance use prevention, addiction harm reduction and recovery knowledge, approaches and strategies
- Experience training: facilitating engaging workshops, activities, and/or small groups, including strong group management skills
- Ability to engage multiple outside stakeholders and hold partners accountable
- Ability to connect well across differences (of culture, age, etc.) and respectful of cultural differences, backgrounds and perspectives
- Excellent oral communication skills and demonstrated experience in public speaking, facilitation, and training delivery.
- Excellent written communication skills and an ability to adjust style and messaging depending on the audience and medium
- Strong organizational skills and an ability to juggle multiple, competing priorities and timelines.
- Ability to work as part of a team, but also to work independently and take personal initiative to complete tasks.
- Keen attention to detail and a strong commitment to high-quality products, customer/client service, and team interactions
- Ability to travel across the state
- Valid driver’s license is a plus
Typical hours are Monday -Friday, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. Additional evening and weekend hours are sometimes required to fulfill the duties of this position.
