Mariana Garrettson is The HAVI’s Research Portfolio Coordinator. She has been working in the field of injury and violence prevention, as both a researcher and practitioner, since 2002. She started this work as an advocate for survivors of domestic and sexual violence in a small community-based organization in rural PA. While receiving her Master of Public Health degree she started working at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill Injury Prevention Research Center. She worked with this Center over the course of a decade in many capacities from Graduate Research Assistant through Assistant Director. She has also spent years as a consultant working with state health department injury and violence programs and national organizations like the Safe States Alliance and the Society for Advancement of Violence and Injury Research (SAVIR). In 2016, she first connected with The HAVI and was so impressed by the organization and its members that it’s been the focus of her work ever since. In her role at The HAVI, she leads the team that provides technical assistance to a national cohort of sites funded under the Advancing Hospital Based Victim Services (AHVS) grant through the US Office of Victims of Crime (OVC).
