We are seeking an Associate Director, Frontline Support and CVI Integration to play a critical role in supporting frontline workers by promoting professional certification and hosting other professional development opportunities for hospital-based and hospital-linked violence intervention workers.
To heal communities affected by violence, The Health Alliance for Violence Intervention (www.thehavi.org) fosters hospital and community collaborations to advance equitable, trauma-informed care for violence intervention/ prevention programs. Our vision is to build a system of healthcare that mobilizes hospitals and communities to end violence, together.
Hospital-based violence intervention programs (HVIPs) vary in their design and scope. Essential components of HVIPs include a brief intervention to violently injured patients in the emergency department or at the hospital bedside and intensive community-based case management services following discharge. HVIP services are provided by culturally specific Violence Prevention Professionals. HVIPs are rooted in the philosophy that violence is preventable, and that violent injury offers a “teachable moment” and unique opportunity to break cycles of violence. HVIPs embrace a public health approach to violence prevention as they are grounded in data, which indicate that victims of violence are at elevated risk for re-injury and violence perpetration. This model has been the subject of numerous peer-reviewed studies indicating promising impact on injury recidivism, criminal justice contact, and trauma symptoms. HVIPs are now a recommended practice by the federal government.
The network has grown to hundreds of individuals, including physicians, nurses, social workers, therapists, violence prevention professionals, outreach workers and researchers who are affiliated with 49 member programs in the U.S., Canada, England, and El Salvador. Our goal is to support the growth of HVIPs throughout the United States. The HAVI is structured within 5 divisions: Capacity Building, Organizational Growth and Equity, Policy and Communications, Communities of Practice and the Kaiser Permanente Center for Gun Violence Research and Education.
HVIPs are one of a handful of evidence-informed practices that support cities reduce violence and scale trauma-informed care. The field has been fractured, and recent federal, state, and local advocacy efforts have helped encourage collaboration and coordination across various approaches. This shift – from individual programs to integrated strategies – has led to an emergent concept of a community violence intervention ecosystem (CVI ecosystem).

The Associate Director, Frontline Support and CVI Integration will play a critical role in supporting frontline workers by promoting professional certification and hosting other professional development opportunities for hospital-based and hospital-linked violence intervention workers. We seek a leader who operates through a lens of racial and health equity and who has a strong capacity to focus on clear, achievable goals with the ability to pivot quickly as new opportunities/circumstances arise. The ideal candidate is dynamic and experienced in engaging in meaningful partnerships with key stakeholders, including hospital and community organization leadership, community leaders and stakeholders, program managers and supervisors, frontline violence intervention specialists (from HVIPs and other CVI strategies), and community-based organizations.
The HAVI’s Frontline Support and Community Violence Intervention (CVI) Integration Department supports the network of CVI strategies critical for the success of city-wide violence reduction efforts. By assisting the development, coordination, and implementation of city-wide violence reduction strategies, the department works to solidify HVIP’s positioning within the ecosystem, and helps shape positive outcomes for individuals, families, and communities. The department’s focus is on galvanizing national partnerships, providing oversight of funded coordination projects, providing thought-leadership on advancements in the field, and spurring national conversation about the importance of ecosystem thinking.
The HAVI is a fully remote organization that is fiscally sponsored by HRiA. All HAVI staff who are fully vaccinated may work in HRiA’s Boston office as desired and/or conduct in-person work activities, as necessary. This position can be fully remote or hybrid, depending on the location of the candidate.

The Associate Director, Frontline Support and CVI Integration will report to the Director, Frontline Support and CVI Integration. The Associate Director, Frontline Support and CVI Integration is an exempt and full-time position with a salary range between $90,000 to $100,000 based on skills and experience.
Duties and Responsibilities:
This includes but is not limited to the following:
- Support the Director of Frontline Support and CVI Integration in planning the development and expansion of the department by identifying and operationalizing key strategies
- Manage a portfolio of CVI and HVIP partners.
- Field technical assistance requests from grantees and HAVI member sites and assess the impact of the training and technical assistance provided.
- Participate in developing program models for each site and assist with developing needs assessment tools.
- Supervise and manage staff and projects within the department, as assigned
- Support the development and expansion of the HAVI’s Front Line Worker Engagement
- Support the delivery plan of the HAVI’s Standards and Indicators for Hospital-based Violence Intervention Programs.
- Assist with the staffing of the HAVI’s Empowering the Front Line (EFL) member working group
- Assist with disseminating outcomes and lessons to funders, clients, and other key stakeholders via regular communications (reports, newsletters, curriculum, technical assistance briefs, research papers, etc.)
- Provide support for the HAVI annual conference
- Collaborate across divisions to conduct communications, policy, and research activities as they pertain to current and future Frontline Support and CVI Integration activities and intended outcomes
- Complete other duties as assigned.
- Assist the Director of Frontline Support and CVI Integration in developing department-wide strategy, facilitating program implementation, and creating evaluation tools
- Partner and communicate with other divisions within the HAVI to ensure consistency and efficiency of work across the organization
- Assist in identifying areas of need and growth for new and existing HVIPs and the HAVI’s role in supporting these initiatives
- Participate in the HAVI conference planning core team
- Participate and present in external forums on behalf of the HAVI, as assigned
- Participate in HRiA committees, workgroups, and organization-wide events, as appropriate, and suggest improvements in processes, etc.
- Assist with proposal writing and/or submission
- Identify areas of expansion of service delivery lines that support Frontline workers and CVI cities.
- Bachelor’s degree required. Advanced degrees and/or certifications in Public Health, Social Work, and related fields or comparable work experience.
- 7-10 years of progressive management experience in education, nonprofit, or healthcare sectors.
- Experience with or knowledge of the US healthcare system specifically in response to violence, trauma informed practice, and health equity.
- Experience working with or knowledge of Hospital-based Violence Intervention Programs (HVIPs) is preferred.
- Experience with various community violence models and their roles in the larger CVI ecosystem in communities.
- Experience supervising staff using trauma-informed and strengths-based approaches
- Ability to travel nationally (20-30%)
- Ability to work in a virtual, remote environment.

- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills, including communicating by videoconference, phone, and/or in person (when needed) with community members and organizational partners
- Able to work independently and as a part of a team
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, OneNote, Teams).
- Proficiency in or capability of learning new software, including Zoom, Insightly (CRM (Client Relationship Management)) and Adobe Acrobat
- Resourceful self-starter with a proven ability to perform under tight deadlines
- Flexibility and a sense of humor
- Ability to travel nationally, at the HAVI’s expense
