Brief Overview:

We are seeking an Associate Director of Grants for the Center for Gun Violence Research and Education to work closely with the leadership of the Center to amplify its impact by developing an overarching grantmaking framework and oversee processes that disseminate funding to non-profit partners that advance research and education efforts.

The Health Alliance for Violence Intervention (HAVI) seeks to hire a talented Associate Director of Grants for the Center for Gun Violence Research and Education, which was launched by Kaiser Permanente, the nation’s largest integrated, nonprofit health care provider.  The HAVI is a fiscally sponsored program of Health Resources in Action dedicated to fostering hospital-based violence intervention programs, hospital and community collaborations that advance trauma-informed care, and violence intervention and prevention programs.  Its mission is to build a system of healthcare that mobilizes hospitals and communities to end violence, together.

The HAVI leads the Center on Gun Violence Research and Education with Kaiser Permanente. The focus of the Center is to improve community capability to develop, deploy and scale evidence-based community and health care solutions to prevent gun violence, and mitigate the impact of this violence on families and communities. The Center will promote a public health approach to reducing gun violence through public and professional communication campaigns. It will facilitate collaborative partnerships with academia, governmental organizations, foundations, and private/non-profit organizations and seek to sponsor research, as well as care innovation and educational initiatives. The work produced by the Center will aim to 1) reduce the incidence and impact of gun violence, including suicide, 2) address the emotional and psychological trauma related to the aftermath of shootings, including the disparate impact that gun violence has in communities of color, and 3) provide strong leadership and collaboration with other healthcare providers, community-based organizations, and businesses seeking to participate in solutions that will have a measurable impact on the gun violence epidemic.

Specifically, the center will develop, test, and scale public health and health care solutions to addressing gun violence, including:

  • Research efforts focusing on solutions and interventions to gun violence, and the long-term psychological consequences of these incidents, which are promising but in need of additional evidence;
  • Education efforts addressing the need to inform the public, health care stakeholders, businesses, policymakers, and community-based organizations about the role they can play in reducing gun violence and the consequences of gun violence; and
  • Innovation efforts focusing on novel public health and health care processes, policies, and intervention models to prevent gun shootings, including those that are self-inflicted and between intimate partners.

The Associate Director of Grants will work closely with the leadership of the Center to amplify its impact by developing an overarching grantmaking framework and oversee processes that disseminate funding to non-profit partners that advance research and education efforts. The Center seeks to collaborate with, convene, and serve as a thought leader with non-governmental organizations, universities, community-based organizations, healthcare organizations and other stakeholders with a shared interest in gun violence prevention research, innovation, education, and community-based solutions.

This is a full-time, exempt position. The salary range for this position is $85,000-$100,000 and is commensurate with experience. Duties and Responsibilities:

The Associate Director of Grants will report to the Managing Director of the Center and oversee the development of the framework and processes for disbursing funds to nonprofit entities conducting research and education efforts to address gun violence.  Duties and responsibilities include:

  • Manage community and stakeholder engagement efforts to gather input and feedback on design of funding opportunities;
  • Develop Request for Proposals and application requirements for funding opportunities, including but not limited to terms of the award, budget templates, and other application materials;
  • Establish selection criteria and scoring processes to determine recommendations for funding;
  • Develop list of relevant organizations, networks, and platforms for dissemination of funding opportunities;
  • Provide ongoing technical and other types of assistance for applicants and serve as a primary contact throughout application processes;
  • Facilitate review processes in identifying entities recommended for funding, including providing orientation and other supports to members;
  • Present recommendations to decision-making bodies;
  • Oversee award agreement and award payment processes;
  • Support post-award activities, including collaborating with Center staff to provide capacity building efforts for awardees;
  • Cultivate and maintain positive working relationships with key national/state partners, community stakeholders, prospective and current funders, and the Center’s Advisory Committee;
  • Develop networks with other funding entities dedicated to funding gun violence research and education for the purposes of co-funding;
  • Work with evaluators to develop framework and reporting requirements for awardees;
  • Participate in partner organization events on violence prevention/intervention strategies; and
  • Manage important internal and external opportunities and challenges.

Candidate Qualifications:

  • An advanced degree (Ph.D. preferred) in public health, public policy, health care, or a relevant, related field with a solid understanding of the fields of philanthropy, community health, social justice, and/or racial and health equity
  • At least 5-7 years of relevant work experience in increasing positions of leadership with a strong preference for candidates with a research background and/or experience in research grantmaking
  • Ability to maintain solid relationships with staff, board, donors, and community members
  • Strong experience in program management, strategic planning, facilitation, training/capacity building, and/or program design/planning
  • Excellent verbal and written skills, including strong presentation skills and the ability to translate complex technical language
  • Experience in developing and managing grant programs and grantmaking practices
  • Knowledge of emerging trends, challenges, and best practices in health equity, philanthropy, and public health
  • Experience working with and managing diverse clients and meeting or exceeding expectations in quality and performance
  • Solid management experience including developing, leading, and supervising complex projects and high performing teams
  • An ability to acquire new knowledge, understand the core work of the organization and successfully encourage the team in meeting goals
  • Evidence of experience effectively communicating complex and sensitive issues to diverse audiences, orally and in writing
  • Experience with fiscal/budgetary/accounting; reporting, compliance, and accountability; and human resources
  • Ability to work remotely
  • Ability to work as a part of a team–leading when appropriate and accepting feedback
  • Ability to adapt communication appropriately for purpose and audience
  • Fluency in Microsoft Office applications (Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Outlook)
