We are searching for a full-time Policy Associate to join HRiA’s Policy & Practice team. This is an exciting opportunity to help build the capacity of people and organizations to advance health and racial equity. Primarily, this position will support the development and implementation of the Racial Equity and Leadership Initiative, participating in a cross-organizational team to train the City of Boston’s 18,000 employees and engage departments in planning efforts to operationalize racial equity.
This is an exempt, full-time position that can be based remotely or in our Boston office once it reopens in 2021 (exact timing to be determined). Funding for this role goes through November 2021; however, we have 180 active projects and for good performers, we work hard to find other opportunities as projects end. The starting range for this salary is in the mid 50’s.

The Policy Associate will work collaboratively with a cross-disciplinary team to conduct environmental scans, literature reviews, and formative research (e.g., focus groups and interviews); support design and delivery of capacity building efforts (via training and technical assistance); develop resources and tools; and identify and communicate best practices and innovative approaches to advance racial and health equity. The ideal candidate is committed to social justice and a passionate advocate of health and racial equity, with a strong analysis of the root causes of inequities and how racism is a public health crisis. The Policy Associate will report to HRiA’s Managing Director of Health Equity.
Duties and Responsibilities:
- Communicate effectively, efficiently, and appropriately with team members and team leads, and the HRiA supervisor.
- Coordinate and participate in team meetings, in collaboration with project leads and supervisors.
- Develop and implement workplans to help organization advance health and racial equity.
- Conduct formative research, including environmental scans, literature reviews, and policy landscape analyses to identify best practices for advancing health and racial equity in diverse contexts (e.g., geography, sector, community, etc.).
- Lead and/or support interviews and focus groups.
- Lead and/or support data analysis and report writing.
- Create or adapt resources and tools to support equity-focused assessment and capacity building efforts for local and statewide change.
- Support design and delivery of capacity building efforts (e.g., training, technical assistance, and continuous quality improvement).
- Write and edit materials including print and web copy for communication products and campaigns, including a quarterly newsletter.
- Coordinate and develop program reports and workplans; monitor progress of goals and objectives as defined by specific equity-focused initiatives.
- Support the work of the Policy and Practice Department by contributing to the development and implementation of projects and programs, developing and conducting training, and performing administrative functions.
- Contribute technical skills and/or content expertise to other related HRiA projects and the organization, as appropriate or needed.
- Maintain or build skills in management, supervision, health and racial equity, and related content areas.
- Contribute to blogs, website content, and other communications efforts to share and promote organizational approaches, expertise, and learning.
- Present at conferences and events with senior staff, as appropriate.
- Suggest ideas/improvements in project and/or organizational processes and systems through participation in teams and committees.
New Business Development
- Assist with proposal writing and/or submission as needed; this may include working with the Managing Director of Health Equity and Policy and Practice staff to prepare scopes of work and budgets for contract extensions, as well as working with the Development Manager to prepare proposal for rebids or other new opportunities.
Typical work hours are Monday – Friday, 9:00 am – 5:00 pm. Additional evening and weekend hours are sometimes required to fulfill the duties of this position.

- Bachelor’s degree and at least two years of professional experience working in community health and/or health and racial equity-focused efforts.
- Commitment to and understanding of health and racial equity and strong analysis of the root causes of inequities and how racism is a public health crisis.
- Experience and skills in project management including developing and/or implementing workplans and working with clients, partners, community members, and a range of stakeholders.
- Ability to analyze and synthesize research, background documents, and other data.
- Strong organizational and time management skills, and ability to juggle many projects and tasks at once.
- Strong written and verbal communication, interpersonal, and facilitation skills, including communicating by video conference, phone, and/or in person (when needed) and ability to adjust style and messaging depending on the audience and medium.
- Ability to engage clients, and multisector and community-level stakeholders and hold partners accountable.
- Ability to connect well across a diversity of thought, backgrounds, and perspectives.
- Ability to work as part of a team, but also to work independently and take personal initiative to complete tasks.
- Keen attention to detail and a strong commitment to high-quality products, customer/client service, and team interactions.
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, OneNote, Teams).
- Proficiency in or capability of learning new software (e.g., Zoom, Google Suite – Google Slides, Notes, etc.).
- Ability to work virtually with a strong and stable internet connection during the COVID-19 pandemic.
