LEAH Program Associate – College Access Support

Brief Overview:

We are seeking a Program Associate to manage LEAH’s college/post-secondary access programming while providing overall support to the LEAH Project.

Position Description:

As part of our capacity building work and our deep expertise in youth development, HRiA manages and implements the Leaders through Education, Action, and Hope (LEAH) Project. The LEAH Project is a science, technology, engineering and math (STEM), college access, and career readiness program for Boston area youth typically underrepresented in STEM fields. LEAH’s mission is to promote the power of youth, especially Black, Indigenous, People of Color (BIPOC) youth, to diversify the STEM fields. Through paid STEM internships, dynamic college and career readiness programming, and meaningful youth leadership opportunities, LEAH cultivates the confidence of youth and equips them with the skills and connections they need to thrive. Participating youth have access to a variety of STEM internship opportunities including LEAH’s signature STEM teaching internships, LEAH Knox Scholars Biomedical Research internships, and general STEM internships.

The Program Associate is responsible for managing LEAH’s college/post-secondary access programming while providing overall support to the LEAH Project. The Program Associate will be responsible for developing and implementing a range of tasks and activities (described below) with a goal of achieving 100% high school graduation and post-secondary acceptance among LEAH Youth Leaders. The Program Associate will also support programming for LEAH alumni to support them while in college. Primary responsibilities include: implementing grade specific post-secondary readiness curricula for LEAH youth, working intensively with LEAH’s seniors on college and financial aid applications, coordinating and overseeing academic and SAT tutors, and planning events related to post-secondary preparedness.

The ideal candidate for this position is someone who believes in and has supported youth leadership; has some college admissions experience; and is flexible in a fast-paced environment, resourceful, and detail oriented. The Program Associate will be supervised by the LEAH Project’s Senior Manager.

This is an exempt, full-time position with a salary range of low to mid-$50k, based on skills and experience. The Program Associate will be based in the HRiA’s Boston office, with the option of occasionally working from home.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Management

  • Manage and develop a college/post-secondary access curriculum based on each grade.
  • Recruit and supervise LEAH’s AmeriCorps Massachusetts Promise Fellow (a 10-month long service position).
  • Recruit and manage academic/SAT tutors.
  • Participate in and assist with facilitation of weekly LEAH team meetings.

Project Work

  • Implement program activities to help achieve a 100% high school graduation and college. acceptance goal. For example, college visits and information sessions, career panels, etc.
  • Facilitate weekly college readiness and access workshops for the youth during the school year and summer.
  • Support the development and implementation of alumni engagement and college persistence plan for LEAH alumni.
  • Develop partnerships with other college/post-secondary readiness programs in Boston to leverage existing resources.
  • Build trusting and safe relationships with current youth and alumni.
  • In collaboration with other LEAH team members:
    • Develop and facilitate workshops/events and one-on-one check ins to advance youths’ career readiness, leadership, communication, and other skills
    • Plan events such as family orientation, college panels, and LEAH’s annual graduation event
    • Conduct site visits and communicate with site supervisors to support youth in our LEAH STEM teaching internship (sites are where youth are placed to teach STEM lessons to elementary school students)

Thought Leadership

  • Contribute to blogs, website content, LEAH’s newsletter, and social media as well other sources to share and promote our expertise
  • Present at conferences or events, as appropriate
  • Contribute ideas for improvements in project and/or organizational processes and systems through participation in teams and committees

New Business Development

  • Contribute to proposal writing and/or submission as needed; this may include working with the Senior Program Manager or Program Director to prepare scopes of work and budgets, writing final reports, or preparing grant proposals for renewals or other new opportunities
  • Contribute to HRiA and LEAH websites and social media accounts

 

Candidate Qualifications:

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least two years of professional experience working with high school-aged youth (ideally youth of color or first-generation college youth) OR four or more years of professional experience in education and/or experience working with high-school-aged youth (ideally youth of color or first-generation college youth).
  • Experience in increasing college/post-secondary access among first generation college youth.
  • Knowledge of youth development, youth programming, education, and leadership development.
  • A strong passion for working with young people.
  • Experience facilitating engaging workshops, activities, and/or small groups, including strong group management skills.
  • Demonstrated experience in working with diverse populations.
  • Excellent oral communication skills and demonstrated experience in public speaking, facilitation, and training delivery.
  • Excellent written communication skills and an ability to adjust style and messaging depending on the audience and medium.
  • Demonstrated ability to prioritize and coordinate multiple projects simultaneously and take personal initiative.
  • Ability to work as part of a team, but also to work independently and take personal initiative to complete tasks.
  • Familiarity with Boston Public Schools and/or prior experience supporting academic achievement of K-12 students preferred.
  • Spanish language skills are a plus.

Typical hours are Monday – Friday, 10:00 am – 6:00 pm. Additional evening and weekend hours are sometimes required to fulfill the duties of this position.
