HRiA’s Training and Capacity Building Department is widely recognized for its youth development approach, which recognizes and builds on young people’s assets and strengths. The Department builds healthy communities by increasing the capacities of youth and the adults who work with them by providing a comprehensive set of consultative services (including facilitative training, technical assistance, program development, relationship building, and event planning) to not for profit organizations, public sector agencies, community coalitions, youth serving organizations and individuals.
The 84 is a statewide movement of youth fighting tobacco in Massachusetts. The 84 represents the 84% of Massachusetts youth who did NOT smoke when the movement began. Now, 94% of youth do NOT smoke. For more information about The 84 visit https://the84.org/
The Program Associate will work on The 84 Movement, a statewide youth leadership and tobacco prevention movement in Massachusetts. The 84 comprises groups of high-school-aged youth in community-based organizations and high schools across the state, which are called “Chapters.”
The Associate will:
- Lead the planning, grant program, and assessment of how to expand The 84 Movement to middle schools, and serve as the liaison to eight pilot middle school Chapters
- Mentor 20 high school members of the Statewide Leadership Team (SLT) on topics such as tobacco prevention, public speaking, and the post-secondary education opportunities, and ensure that the SLT has an authentic role in guiding The 84’s programming and direction
- Speak about tobacco use and vaping at large school-wide assemblies in middle schools throughout the state
- Train youth in middle school and high school Chapters on tobacco topics (with the majority of content being already available)
- Create social media content for Instagram, Facebook, and Twitter
- Perform administrative work that supports our program, including maintaining financial paperwork for youth, interfacing with vendors, handling logistics for statewide events (e.g., scheduling legislative visits for 200 youth), and managing smaller portions of The 84 Movement budget.
The Program Associate will report to the Program Director.
Duties and Responsibilities:
Management and Supervision
Manage middle school pilot expansion
- Lead efforts to expand The 84 Movement to middle schools by serving as a liaison to 8 pilot Chapters
- Train pilot middle school Chapters on pertinent tobacco topics using our developed content
- Manage grant deliverables of 8 pilot middle school Chapters
- Strategize ways to authentically engage middle school youth in future programming
- Consult with the SLT on ways to grow The 84 Movement and authentically include youth voice
Oversee and Manage Statewide Leadership Team:
- Oversee a team of 20 diverse youth involved in The 84 Movement to serve on the SLT.
- Work individually with SLT high school aged youth to develop their leadership skills, provide college and career readiness support, and check in on academic progress.
- Help youth apply for scholarship opportunities, other leadership or service opportunities, and college applications.
- Design and implement at least one SLT overnight retreat, and potentially another larger retreat, funding dependent.
- Guide the SLT in planning and leading two statewide events and other presentation opportunities as needed.
- Track attendance and communicate regularly with youth to maintain active engagement.
- Solicit regular feedback from youth to improve their overall experience.
Give school-wide middle school assemblies:
- Use created content to memorize and effectively deliver a 1-hour presentation to engage large bodies of middle schools statewide.
- Train 20 middle schools statewide using the previously developed presentation
- Report on feedback and grant deliverables to funder.
- Create original content for web post and social media updates for the programs and maintain daily engagement.
- Curate content from related articles/outside sources to use for social media posts; share with team monthly.
- Organize and manage live posting for events.
- Recruit new Chapters of The 84 at community-based organizations, high schools, and middle schools.
- Coordinate focus groups with middle schools throughout the state to engage in our program.
- Provide statewide training, facilitation and technical assistance to individuals, youth programs, agencies and government entities in youth leadership, tobacco prevention and community change projects.
- Provide support for training development and facilitation for statewide events, Chapter trainings, and other opportunities as they arise.
- Develop agendas, create content, and facilitate weekly SLT calls on Sunday evenings (or other time as agreed upon by the youth) on programmatic topics or other topics that are of interest to the team.
- Assist in preparing SLT for statewide events using a train-the-trainer model and focusing on public speaking.
- Assist in facilitating classroom presentations and school-wide assemblies to high school and middle school students
- Provide technical assistance to adult advisors of the program to support them in their efforts (e.g. completing activities, registering for events, informing them of leadership opportunities for their youth, etc.).
- Edit documents and provide feedback to the team on relevant events, projects, or issues.
- Assist with daily administrative tasks including check requests, expense reporting, and processing reimbursements, among others.
- Provide administration support for statewide events such as registration, logistics, pre-event preparation, evaluation input, and day-of coordination.
- Provide additional program and administrative support to the team wherever applicable.
- Facilitate staff meeting and participate in other departmental and agency activities.
- Develop strategies for engaging middle school aged youth in tobacco prevention
- Suggest ideas and improvements to the organization through participation in teams and committees.
- Build knowledge and skills related to tobacco prevention, youth development, and health equity.
- Develop social media plan for each fiscal year that best promotes the program and engages appropriate audiences.
- Assist with writing proposals for funding opportunities.
- Support senior staff in fund-raising and other grant-writing as needed.
- Gather and prepare proposal documentation (forms, resumes, etc.).
In addition, the candidate will serve on a team of other staff members that work on this project and provide general team support whenever appropriate.
- A Bachelor’s degree and/or 3-5 years of relevant experience working with youth/adults in a human service agency
- A strong passion for tobacco control work with young people, and ideally some experience working with youth is preferred.
- Ability to work a flexible schedule, including some early mornings, some evenings, a few hours weekly on Sunday evenings, and at least five full weekend days per year.
- Comfortable speaking to and/or training small and very large groups, ideally to youth audiences.
- Strong facilitation skills.
- Excellent organizational and communication skills.
- The ability to work independently and as part of a team.
- Willingness to make “cold calls” to organizations to grow the program.
- A driver’s license and the willingness to occasionally transport young people or other staff (at HRiA’s expense).
- Strong time management skills and ability to maintain a positive work-life balance.
- Strong critical thinking and problem-solving skills.
- Basic understanding of social media platforms (Facebook, Instagram, Snapchat, and Twitter).
- Ability to be creative and engaging in developing content and working with youth.
- Excellent attention to detail, especially with editing.
- Microsoft Office proficiency.
- Demonstrated success working with diverse populations.
- Expertise in youth development and cultural competence a plus.
- A strong sense of humor and a team player attitude.
- Familiarity with Massachusetts geography and a wide network of contacts is a plus.
