We are seeking a Senior Manager, Peer Learning, to play a critical role in the growth and development of the Peer Learning department for the HAVI.
To heal communities affected by violence, The Health Alliance for Violence Intervention (www.thehavi.org) fosters hospital and community collaborations to advance equitable, trauma-informed care for violence intervention/ prevention programs. Our vision is to build a system of healthcare that mobilizes hospitals and communities to end violence, together.
Hospital-based violence intervention programs (HVIPs) vary in their design and scope. Essential components of HVIPs include a brief intervention to violently injured patients in the emergency department or at the hospital bedside and intensive community-based case management services following discharge. HVIP services are provided by culturally competent Violence Prevention Professionals. HVIPs are rooted in the philosophy that violence is preventable, and that violent injury offers a “teachable moment” and unique opportunity to break cycles of violence. HVIPs embrace a public health approach to violence prevention as they are grounded in data, which indicate that victims of violence are at elevated risk for re-injury and violence perpetration. This model has been the subject of numerous peer-reviewed studies indicating promising impact on injury recidivism, criminal justice contact, and trauma symptoms. HVIPs are now a recommended practice by the federal government.
The network has grown to hundreds of individuals, including physicians, nurses, social workers, therapists, violence prevention professionals, outreach workers and researchers who are affiliated with over 50 member programs in the U.S., Canada, England, and El Salvador. Our goal is to support the growth of HVIPs throughout the United States. The HAVI is structured within 4 divisions: Capacity Building, Organizational Growth and Equity, Policy and Communications, and Communities of Practice.
HVIPs are one of a handful of evidence-informed practices that support cities reduce violence and scale trauma-informed care. The field has been fractured, and recent federal, state, and local advocacy efforts have helped encourage collaboration and coordination across various approaches. This shift – from individual programs to integrated strategies – has led to an emergent concept of a community violence intervention ecosystem (CVI ecosystem).
The HAVI is a fiscally sponsored project of Health Resources in Action, Inc. (HRiA).
The Senior Manager, Peer Learning, will play a critical role in the growth and development of the Peer Learning department. The ideal candidate has extensive experience building relationships with various stakeholders in the violence intervention community. We seek a candidate with experience in the US healthcare system, specifically hospital-based violence intervention programs (HVIPs) and supporting programs with a health equity lens. We seek leaders with a passion for violence intervention work who understand the powerful impact of HVIPs. It is critical that the candidate can focus on clear and achievable goals while also being able to pivot quickly as new opportunities/circumstances arise.
The HAVI’s Peer Learning Department focuses on educational opportunities that enhance the connections, experiences, and well-being of established HVIP programs with at least 1 year of experience. This includes HAVI full members, emerging members, and prospective HAVI members. This department oversees the HAVI annual conference, membership services, working groups, and technical assistance through special projects.
The HAVI hosts a large annual conference, which convenes over 700 professionals implementing our health approach throughout the country and the world. We also staff member working groups that focus on Mental Health, Research, Policy, Workforce Development, and more, and provide training and technical assistance to hospitals and communities that want to begin HVIPs and to existing programs that need support.
The HAVI is a fully remote organization that is fiscally sponsored by HRiA. Due to the COVID-19 pandemic, most HRiA staff are currently working remotely as well. All HAVI staff who are fully vaccinated may work in HRiA’s Boston office as desired and/or conduct in-person work activities, as necessary. This position can be fully remote or hybrid, depending on the location of the candidate.

The Senior Manager, Peer Learning, will report to the Director, Peer Learning. The Senior Manager, Peer Learning, is an exempt and full-time position with a salary range between $75,000 – $85,000.
Duties and Responsibilities:
This includes but is not limited to the following:
- With the Director of Peer Learning, manage the development and implementation plans for connecting and expanding HAVI HVIP membership.
- Manage a portfolio of HVIP grantees.
- Field technical assistance requests from HVIP grantees and HAVI member sites and assess the impact of the technical assistance provided.
- Manage document development and the updating and sharing of resources with existing and prospective HVIP partners.
- Manage and support the staffing of the HAVI working groups / communities of practice.
- Lead and manage components of the planning and implementation of the HAVI conference.
- Supervise and manage staff and projects within the department, as assigned.
- Support Department leadership in the development and implementation of organizational initiatives, objectives, and strategies related to membership, the conference, technical assistance to HVIP grantees, and other peer learning efforts.
- Coordinate and provide project management support to ongoing initiatives, including the HAVI peer learning working groups, task forces, and communities of practice.
- Establish and maintain effective working relationships with internal and external stakeholders in the HAVI network, including member programs, and HVIP partners.
- Contribute to and maintain content on HAVI’s website and membership pages to provide up-to-date resources for existing and prospective members.
- Prepare correspondence and communications with key stakeholders.
- Complete other duties as assigned.
- Lead the development and facilitation of co-created spaces to meaningfully engage with existing and prospective members, and other partners in the HAVI peer learning network.
- Assist in identifying areas of need and growth for new and existing HVIPs and strategizing the HAVI’s role in supporting those initiatives.
- Participate in conference planning core team.
- Participate in conducting research on violence prevention, peer learning, and related topics.
- Participate in HRiA committees, workgroups, and organization-wide events, as appropriate, and suggest improvements in processes, etc.
- Support the development of funding proposals as assigned.
- Build partnerships to support HAVI’s peer learning work and to explore new business opportunities.
- Experience working for or with a Hospital Violence Intervention Program (HVIP)
- Bachelor’s degree with 5-7 years of relevant experience, or equivalent experience
- Experience with strategic planning, process improvement, performance management, and/or program evaluation.
- Experience working directly with people from diverse racial, ethnic, and socioeconomic backgrounds.
- Demonstrated knowledge of and deep commitment to racial equity, and familiarity with racial equity principles.
- Strong project management skills, especially leading and directing projects
- Ability to demonstrate for project tasks, particularly as it relates to initiating meetings, follow-ups, and communications to keep projects moving forward.
- A commitment to racial equity, and diversity of thought, respectful of cultural backgrounds, and perspectives
- Commitment to and understanding of health and racial equity and strong understanding of the root causes of inequities and how racism is a public health crisis.
- Strong organizational skills and an ability to juggle multiple, competing priorities and timelines.

- Ability to identify priority project tasks, gather input and guidance, and accomplish them independently with minimal additional oversight.
- High level of engagement and self-motivation, with a demonstrated ability to commit to and follow through on projects and strong organizational skills and accuracy.
- Strong written, verbal, and interpersonal skills, including communicating by videoconference, phone, and/or in person (when needed) with community members and organizational partners
- Able to work independently and as a part of a team
- Proficiency with Microsoft Office (e.g., Word, Excel, Outlook, PowerPoint, OneNote, Teams).
- Proficiency in or capability of learning new software, including Zoom, Insightly (CRM (Client Relationship Management)) and Adobe Acrobat
- Resourceful self-starter with a proven ability to perform under tight deadlines
- Flexibility and a sense of humor
- Ability to travel nationally, at the HAVI’s expense
