Vice President, People and Culture

Brief Overview:

We are seeking a Vice President, People and Culture to serve as the Chief Human Resources Officer and is responsible for leading the development and implementation of the organization’s human resources strategy, policies, and practices to support HRiA’s mission and goals.

Opportunity

The Vice President, People and Culture serves as the Chief Human Resources Officer and is responsible for leading the development and implementation of the organization’s human resources strategy, policies, and practices to support HRiA’s mission and goals.

As HRiA’s first Vice President focused solely on People and Culture, this individual will serve as Chief Advisor to the President and will have the leadership, organizational design and change management expertise to build and lead a highly functional HR organization.

The Vice President will lead a newly expanded team of 8-10 HR professionals to develop a best-in-class Human Resource and Talent Management strategy and roadmap to increase employee engagement and retention in a fast-paced, growing national organization.

This individual will be tasked with overseeing the creation of a new learning and development model, research and recommend best practice changes to an evolving supervision model and improve the employee experience while maintaining a robust employee value proposition in a highly active recruitment environment.

The Vice President provides strategic leadership and HR vision by articulating and addressing HR needs by collaborating with the President and/or Executive Team. The Vice President plays a critical role as an organizational strategy, design and change management advisor, partnering with leadership on initiatives ranging from organization communications, employee value proposition, and succession planning. The Vice President champions and leads the implementation of the internal goals, and objectives identified in HRiA’s plan to advance diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging, in close collaboration with the Vice President of Health and Racial Equity, senior leadership, and HRiA’s cross organizational Health Equity in Action team.

The Vice President will be a proactive, collaborative change agent as well as a charismatic leader with the mindset to challenge the status quo in developing equitable organizational policies and practices that foster a work environment where all staff thrive. This leader will bring a deep grounding in diversity, equity, inclusion, and belonging to guide this organizational culture transformation work. This leader will use a collaborative approach that is empowering HRiA’s community and culture. With confidence and gravitas, the Vice President will operate with a high degree of integrity, transparency, and clarity.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Supervision and Management

  • Lead, mentor, direct, and support the work of the HR team of eight to ten experienced HR professionals, promoting a culture of high performance and continuous improvement.
  • Directly supervise, mentor, and coach two senior staff. 

Strategy, Organizational Design and Change Management

  • Establish and implement HR efforts that effectively reflect and support the organization’s vision, mission, and values.
  • Provide guidance and strategic direction for all dimensions of the business impacting the organization’s structure, staffing, employee engagement and experience, and employee relations.
  • Guide change processes with strategic clarity, a collaborative spirit, and empathy.
  • Provide leadership and analysis that supports the evolution of HRiA’s business and organization, including but not limited to, planning for organizational growth or contraction, evolving organization and job design, succession planning, and workforce management.
  • As a member of the Executive Team, advise the President & CEO, Executive Team, and members of the Senior Leadership Team on the HR opportunities, implications, and risks related to key issues and important strategic decisions.
  • Function as a strategic business advisor to the executive/senior management of each departmental unit or specialty group regarding key organizational and management issues.

People and Culture

  • Foster a diverse, inclusive, welcoming, and affirming organizational culture across all Clusters and levels of the organization.
  • Champion and advance HRiA’s strategic, internal diversity, equity, and inclusion efforts in collaboration with leadership and staff representatives.
  • Partner with Executive Team and Senior Leadership Team members to embody and champion HRiA’s workplace culture and organizational values.
  • Execute employee engagement strategies with the guidance and input of the HRIA leadership team.
  • Shape the vision for HRiA’s geographically dispersed, hybrid work environment to support core values and culture.
  • Oversee the data collection, analysis, goal setting, planning, and communication of HRiA’s affirmative action plan.

Operations

  • Adopt and institutionalize leading-edge human resources policies, practices, systems, and tools that elevate HRiA’s human resource capacity and establish consistent best practices.
  • Develop comprehensive recruiting and retention plans to meet HRiA’s staffing needs.
  • Develop and implement a competitive employee value proposition that includes a cost-effective comprehensive compensation model and attractive benefits plans.
  • Manage employment-related risks and ensure compliance with internal policies and employment laws and regulations.

Candidate Qualifications:

  • Demonstrated success in leading people and culture functions in a mission-based organization.
  • Demonstrated interpersonal and communication skills with a high level of empathy and emotional intelligence. Comfortable presenting and mediating issues with colleagues.
  • Successful record of leading human resources and other teams that have contributed to the overall success of an organization in times of change.
  • Prior experience managing multiple priorities and developing infrastructure, policies, and systems that support the mission of an organization, strong teams, collaboration, and accountability.
  • Demonstrated success serving as a business partner with other leaders in strategic thinking, planning, implementation, and problem solving.
  • Leadership in conflict resolution, and team-building skills; the ability to motivate, influence, inspire trust and confidence, set goals, delegate, and ensure the accountability of team and colleagues.
  • Experience working in a nonprofit organization is a plus.
  • Ability to work with agility and decorum under pressure.
  • Ability to lead complex programs, build project tasks with a keen attention to detail.
  • Strong analytical and problem-solving skills with a demonstrated ability to analyze, synthesize, and report on HR data at a sophisticated level to inform organizational strategy, decision-making, and planning.
  • Thorough knowledge of HR best practices, employment-related laws, and regulations.
  • Proficient with Microsoft Office Suite and knowledge of and experience with human resource information systems.

Education and Certifications

  • A BS/BA degree from an accredited college/university; MBA or MA/MS in human resources or related field preferred.
  • A minimum of 15 years of HR experience, with at least five years of executive HR experience leading a team of HR staff.
  • PHR/SPHR or SHRM Senior Certified Professional (SHRM-SCP) or SHRM Certified Professional (SHRM-CP) certification preferred.

Employment and Compensation:

This is an exempt, full-time position with the opportunity to work remotely and from our Boston office. The salary range for this position is $175,000 – $220,000 commensurate with skills and experience.
