Director, Education and Workforce Development, MACHW

Brief Overview:

We are seeking a full-time Director of Education and Workforce Development for the Massachusetts Association of Community Health Workers MACHW, who will oversee our educational offerings,  career pathways for CHWs within and beyond CHW practice, and CHW practice standardization. This is an exempt, full-time, fully remote position that requires extensive travel within the state.

MACHW is the professional association of Community Health Workers (CHWs) in Massachusetts dedicated to strengthening the workforce by creating and/or advocating for legislation and other policies that support the profession; advocating for recognition, integration, and fair compensation within the health and social service fields; and creating and supporting professional development opportunities for CHWs in the state and nationally.  Under the guidance of an Advisory Board, MACHW works tirelessly on behalf of the estimated 3000 plus CHWs in the state.  MACHW was created in 2000 by a dedicated group of CHWs. In 2017, MACHW became fiscally sponsored by Health Resource in Action, Inc. (HRiA), to ensure sustainability and increase efficiency.

Position Description

We are searching for a full-time Director of Education and Workforce Development for the Massachusetts Association of Community Health Workers MACHW, a fiscally sponsored program of Health Resources in Action. This is an exciting opportunity to contribute to the advancement of the CHW workforce both state and national. The candidate will oversee our educational offerings,  career pathways for CHWs within and beyond CHW practice, and CHW practice standardization.

Education: The Director will research, create content, and develop curricula for all our educational activities. The director leads our efforts to create career pathways for CHWs within and beyond CHW practice. In this role, the Director cultivates and manages a pool of trainers that is diverse and includes trained CHWs; and develops, in partnership with evaluation sub-contractors, evaluation plans and tools for our training and career advancement programs.

Workforce Development: The director will a) work closely with colleges and universities as well as CHW Training Programs to create structured and accessible pathways for CHWs to advance professionally within and beyond CHW practice.  In addition to forging career pathways with relevant partners, the Director will oversee two key initiatives the “academic success incubator” and assist in the establishment of the CHW Scholarship Fund.

CHW Practice Standardization: The director will curate best practice resources for our virtual library and oversee the development of the “CHW Resource Center” (RC). This includes developing a business plan, creating organizational readiness tools for clients, and overseeing the development of a marketing strategy.

The Director supervises the Manager of Member Engagement and the Manager of the CHW Resource Center. Reports to the Executive Director. This is an exempt, full-time, fully remote position that requires extensive travel within the state. Salary Range is $94K to $109K, depending on experience.

CHW Practice Standardization: The director oversees MACHW initiatives aimed at bringing consistency to CHW practice including, the employer resource center, the coordination of CHW core competency training, and the newly created “CHWS as consultants” initiative.

The Director of Education and Career Advancement oversees the development of training curricula and promotional materials to assist CHWs across the state enhance their skills to advance professionally within and beyond community health worker practice.  In addition, the candidate will develop content for our website and social media including, developing short videos featuring community health workers. The design of all training curricula and promotional materials must be framed in a health and racial equity context.

To excel in this role, the Director must a) cultivate multi-sector partnerships including CHW training programs, colleges and universities, health care systems, and community-based organizations; b) possess strong research and curriculum development skills; and c) strong knowledge of frameworks and curricula for promoting racial justice and health equity.

Duties and Responsibilities:

The Director will be responsible for the development, implementation, and evaluation of training and support opportunities for CHWs to advance professionally- both within and beyond- community health worker practice. In this capacity, the Director in consultation with our CHW Advisors- researches content and creates training curricula and promotional materials that are grounded on racial justice and health equity.

The Director cultivates and engages with workforce development partners, including colleges, universities, CHW training programs, and employers, to create opportunities for career advancement and ensure success.

The Director works to ensure that all our training offerings are consistent, evaluated, and meet our strategic goals. They work with the Manager of Member Engagement to include CHWs in the planning, implementation, and evaluation of our training. plan writer who develops content, both visual and written for MACHW’s newsletter, website, and social media. continuously engages CHW members and allies in the six regions of the state to ensure the relevance and quality of MACHW’s offerings.  To achieve this, they work closely with MACHW chapter coordinators and the Coordinator of Member Engagement.

Another critical aspect of this position is the continuous assessment of the training needs and professional development challenges of CHWs across the state. This requires conducting surveys, and focus groups, and engaging with and establishing ongoing partnerships with CHWs employers (community health centers, based community-based organizations, municipalities, etc.)  in the 6 regions of the state.

They will provide significant project management expertise in a fast-paced, high-visibility context to ensure the effective, efficient, and timely implementation of projects. This includes but is not limited to the following:

  • Organize and streamline data management of Workforce Development Programs.
  • Present on program outcomes, workforce initiatives, and educational advancements at regional and national conferences.
  • Attend relevant conferences, workshops, and seminars to stay updated on best practices and bring back learnings to enhance team strategies.
  • Ensure that Workforce Development participants have a direct pipeline to employment opportunities at partner programs.
  • Create and Participate in evaluation and continuous program quality improvement efforts.
  • Establish and promote high standards, expectations, and consistency across Workforce Development programs.
  • Work as part of a collaborative team to develop and implement a multi-year plan for the Workforce Development portfolio based on the needs of the field.

Management

  • Supervises the Manager of Members Engagement and the Manager of the CHW Resource Center.
  • Oversees quality of all consultants including training and evaluation.
  • Manages all activities related to CHW Week.
  • Ensures all consultant contracts are in place and in compliance with HRiA requirements.

Project Work

  • Research and create content for all our training offerings, including workshops, webinars, learning communities, communities of practice, and Employer Resource Center.
  • Oversees the development and implementation of the Employer Resource Center.
  • Establishes and cultivates relationships with colleges and universities to create pathways for professional development and career advancement.
  • Creates and oversees the annual CHW Core Competency Training Summit and other meetings and events designed to cultivate relationships and enhance quality and relevance of CHW training programs across the state.
  • Works with Evaluation consultants to create an evaluation plan, develop the necessary tools, and produce an annual report of all MACHW activities.
  • Oversees the development, implementation, and evaluation of the incubator.
  • Developing and implementing a flexible but specific work plan that supports the management and triage of multiple priorities and needs, while ensuring adherence to an aggressive timeline.
  • Preparing, submitting, and maintaining project documents such as plans, logs, and lessons learned, from project initiation through closing, in coordination with other staff, as required by funders.
  • Managing and facilitating the engagement and participation of project funders, the project team, the subcontractors, and other stakeholders.
  • Supervising, mentoring, evaluating, and supporting the professional development of the Manager of Member Engagement and the Manager of the Employer Resource Center.
  • Approving staff timesheets and schedules as appropriate.
  • Communicating effectively, efficiently, and appropriately with the funders, the project teams, executive director, and other stakeholders.
  • Identifying, prioritizing, and resolving challenges (proactively where possible) to minimize impact to the project goals and timeline.
  • Overseeing subcontractors and monitoring and guiding their programmatic and fiscal progress.
  • Preparing and submitting all required progress and data reports to the funder to ensure contract compliance.
  • Working with the Director to monitor and manage the overall project budget, timeline, and programmatic progress.

Thought Leadership

  • Maintaining or building skills in management, CHW supervision, CHW team integration, and related content areas.
  • Creating content for the MACHW website, social media postings, quarterly newsletters, and other sources to promote MACHW’s expertise.
  • Presenting at conferences/events as appropriate.
  • Suggesting ideas/improvements in project and/or organizational processes and systems through participation in teams and committees.

New Business Development

  • Assisting with proposal writing and/or submission as needed; this may include working with the Executive Director and other staff to prepare scopes of work and budgets for contract extensions, as well as working with the Development Manager to prepare proposals for rebids or other new opportunities.
  • Managing MACHW website, blogs, and other opportunities to market services and expertise.

Candidate Qualifications

  • Bachelor’s degree and at least 6 years of experience as a community health worker, or as a community health worker supervisor

Or a Master’s degree, with a focus on education, public health, health policy, or health care management and at least 2 years of relevant work experience in the field of community health worker practice.

  • Experience with training design and remote learning for adult learners
  • Exceptional verbal, written, and presentation skills.
  • Strong organizational skills and an ability to juggle multiple, competing priorities and timelines.
  • Ability to work remotely and independently
  • Demonstrated Commitment to achieving health and racial equity.
  • Proficient in WordPress and MailChimp preferred.
  • Expertise with community health improvement preferred
  • Strong problem-solving and analytical skills, with an ability to anticipate challenges and propose solutions.
  • Ability to identify priority project tasks, gather input and guidance, and accomplish them independently with minimal additional oversight.
