Managing Director, Accounting

Brief Overview:

We are seeking a Managing Director, Accounting who will manage HRiA’s accounting department while adapting financial systems to match the increasing complexity of a growing organization. This position will have the flexibility of working remotely from home and/or in our Boston office.

Position Description

HRiA is seeking a Managing Director, Accounting who will manage HRiA’s accounting department while adapting financial systems to match the increasing complexity of a growing organization. This is a fantastic opportunity for a collaborative leader who can set a vision for a best-in-class accounting function that provides exceptional service to HRiA’s internal and external clients.

HRiA’s annual operating budget is over $55 million with an additional $37 million in pass-through grants. HRiA manages diverse and complex revenue streams of federal, state, and local government contracts, fees for service, and restricted grants.

Working closely with the Chief Financial Officer and the Senior Director, Budgets & Contracts, the Managing Director, Accounting plays a key financial leadership role. Overseeing the Accounting Department, the Managing Director focuses on departmental and financial management, systems development, policies and procedures, controls, and quality assurance. The Managing Director, Accounting ensures the integrity and quality of financial data and is responsible for producing clear, accurate data and reports. They motivate and guide a team of five accounting staff and report to the Chief Financial Officer.

This position will have the flexibility of working remotely from home and/or in our Boston office. There is a strong preference for candidates who are available during standard business hours of 9:00am-5:00pm EST. The salary range for this position is $125,000-$150,000, depending on experience and skills.

Duties and Responsibilities:

Financial & Team Management

  • Oversee all accounting and financial reporting processes, including a high volume of accounts payable, complex revenue releases, and multifaceted expense allocations.
  • Ensure quality customer service and accurate, timely information are provided both internally and externally.
  • Work closely with the Budget & Contracts team to coordinate and integrate accounting with other finance functions.
  • Develop and support a diverse team of five finance professionals.
  • Work with the Chief Financial Officer and other Finance Team leadership to establish and realize a finance vision and goals.

Systems & Policies

  • Streamline accounting processes and systems, optimizing the functionality and integration of HRiA’s finance tech stack.
  • Work with HRiA’s operations team, IT vendors, and other cross-functional teams to regularly review and enhance finance systems.
  • Document and update accounting policies and procedures, communicate policies to HRiA staff in a timely and accessible manner, and ensure compliance.
  • Regularly review, enhance, and enforce strong controls across all financial processes.

General Ledger

  • Ensure the general ledger is well-maintained and follows GAAP, including complex deferred and restricted revenue tracking.
  • Review general ledger data for accuracy through report analysis, transaction and reconciliation approvals, and internal auditing.

Audit & Reporting

  • Oversee annual financial audit, liaise with audit partner, and ensure the accuracy of timely data provided by staff.
  • Report on the audit process and present the final audit to HRiA’s Chief Financial Officer, Chief Executive Officer, and the Board of Directors’ Finance Committee.
  • Oversee tax and other filings, including IRS Form 990, Massachusetts Form PC, and 1099s; provide retirement plan reporting schedules.
  • Produce monthly financial reports including statements of Financial Position, Revenue & Expense, Cash & Investments and provide explanatory analyses of variances and trends.
  • Create and review dashboards; monitor key financial data, including cash balances and accounts receivable aging.

Other

  • Manage cash, bank, and investment account processes, including ACH payment system.
  • Perform other duties as assigned.

Candidate Qualifications:

Education:

  • A Bachelor’s Degree in accounting, business administration or related field with a minimum of fifteen years’ experience in nonprofit finance, or
  • A Master’s Degree in accounting, business administration or related field with twelve years’ experience in nonprofit finance, and
  • A minimum of five years’ experience in management and supervision.

Technical knowledge, skills, and experience, including:

  • Experience maximizing the use of a financial ERP and promoting seamless integrations with all finance systems—experience with Acumatica is highly preferred,
  • Nonprofit fund accounting and GAAP,
  • Advanced Microsoft Excel and Office 365,
  • Systems, policy and procedures, and report development,
  • Experience managing a diverse set of revenue sources, including Federal grants,
  • Experience supervising, coaching and developing staff,
  • Ability to effectively communicate key data, systems, and policies in an accessible manner,
  • Ability to produce clear and effective written work.
